Germany and Ukraine test armed ground robot for frontline deployment

Remote-controlled and heading for the front lines. ARX Robotics and the Ukrainian company ROBONEERS report completion of the first major system tests.

German defence company ARX Robotics and Ukrainian firm ROBONEERS have tested an armed ground robot called GEREON for frontline use by Ukrainian forces. The first systems are set to be integrated and delivered by the end of 2026, according to the cooperation agreement signed during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to Kyiv in early October alongside President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

GEREON is built by ARX Robotics and can be fitted with the SABER weapons module from ROBONEERS, allowing remotely operated fire support for attack and defence. Unarmed versions of GEREON are already used in Ukraine for various tasks, including supply transportation, wounded evacuation, electronic warfare, reconnaissance, and counter-drone missions.

The aim is to create a flexible robotic system that can be adapted for different frontline missions. GEREON is currently the largest fleet of Western-built unmanned ground vehicles used in Ukraine. The companies have also set up a joint venture to expand production of the Rys Pro unmanned ground vehicle in Germany and Ukraine, targeting more than 1,000 units in the first year.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is visiting Helsing, a defence technology company in Munich, to discuss AI capabilities and meet with the company's management, employees, and works council.
