Fire breaks out at Hitler's mountain retreat, suspect detained: police

On Friday evening, German authorities were alerted to a fire at Adolf Hitler’s mountain retreat, known as the Eagle’s Nest, in Bavaria. Around 200 firefighters were dispatched to combat the blaze at the remote Kehlsteinhaus residence, situated on the peak of Obersalzberg in southern Germany. Upon arriving, firefighters were confronted with flames soaring high into the air, only to discover the building "completely ablaze".

A suspect was subsequently detained, according to police spokeswoman Lisa Maier, who also informed that no one was injured in the incident. The fire's location, at an altitude of 1,834 metres, posed a significant challenge for the firefighters, requiring them to use heavy breathing apparatus to navigate the site. The authorities have initiated a criminal investigation into the matter, though the specifics remain under wraps.

German tabloid Bild reported that a motorcyclist encountered on their way to the scene was taken into custody, with authorities suspecting the fire was set intentionally. The Eagle’s Nest, built in the 1930s, remains a somber reminder of the darker chapters of Germany’s 20th-century history.
