Arkham Horror: Remastered Preview and Exclusive Art Reveal
Out of all my hobbies, there isn’t a single thing that I can point to as the “big bang” moment when my interest in it sparked. Board game enthusiasts may not have a single moment they can point to as the spark that ignited their passion, except for a few exceptions. One such occasion was when the author first played Arkham Horror 2nd Edition by Fantasy Flight Games, back in 2008. This experience led to the creation of one of the author's earliest Facebook photos, capturing the moment a group of friends gathered around a dining room table, their standees lined up to face the Cthulhu giant card as they made their final stand against cosmic horrors.
Now, that same beloved edition is set to return in the form of Arkham Horror Remastered. The campaign to bring this revival to life launched on Gamefound, and IGN spoke with members of Fantasy Flight Games' team to discuss the project, which marks the first release in their "Vault Series." This series aims to reintroduce classic games from Fantasy Flight Games' legendary collection to modern audiences.
The Arkham Horror 2nd Edition, which has been out of print for several years, will now benefit from a smoother experience and lessons learned over the past 15 years since the last expansion.
The team's primary focus was to make the game easier for new players to enter the world of Arkham, reducing the need for constant rule reference throughout the game. Game designer Dane Beltrami explained that many rules have been clarified either through wording or graphic design. Cards now explicitly state their effects, while intuitive graphic design serves as reminders for players during gameplay.
For instance, the terror track was given a more clear graphic design to help players understand the consequences at each terror threshold.
The Remastered edition will also adopt a similar art style to that of FFG's popular Arkham Horror: Living Card Game, which recently released a new core set. This decision was made to modernize the experience and make it more accessible for new players while staying true to the dark, atmospheric aesthetic of the original Arkham Horror.
An exclusive artwork preview provided here on IGN showcases "Tulzscha - The Green Flame," one of the heralds from the Kingsport expansion, created by artist Peter Polach. The image features mysterious cultists shielding themselves from the menacing green fire, with the skulls and other horrors still clearly visible in the figure of Tulzscha itself.
