AI inference is running into a memory bottleneck. Huawei wants to tackle it with OceanStor M900

As AI models grow more complex, the demand for memory capacity increases exponentially. The key-value cache, which stores previously generated context, becomes larger and larger, demanding faster and more efficient storage solutions. Traditional memory options are limited in capacity and speed, while conventional storage provides ample space but introduces latency due to CPU-mediated data paths.

At HUAWEI CONNECT 2026, Huawei unveiled OceanStor M900 Context Memory Storage, a novel approach to bridge the gap between AI inference and memory constraints. By seamlessly integrating context memory closer to compute, OceanStor M900 aims to alleviate the bottleneck by providing a dedicated storage layer for KV cache. Utilizing the high-speed interconnect, UnifiedBus, the system enables KV cache resources to be shared across clusters, providing up to 64PB of capacity and significantly more context available per NPU.

Huawei's innovative ASU disk combines CPU, networking, and storage controller functions, allowing NPUs to access stored cache data in a single hop, avoiding protocol conversion and CPU forwarding altogether. This results in reduced access latency to 60 microseconds, potentially doubling token throughput and halving time to first token in AI coding workloads.

Huawei's KV-aware adaptive storage technology optimizes data placement based on cache lifecycles, boasting endurance of up to 24 drive writes per day, or 16 times that of conventional SSDs. This approach not only enhances performance but also reduces replacement and maintenance costs over time. Huawei's OceanStor M900 represents a paradigm shift in AI infrastructure, emphasizing the interconnected nature of memory, networking, and compute in inference performance.

As agentic AI workloads continue to evolve, the efficiency of context retention, sharing, and retrieval may become as critical as raw computing power in driving the next generation of AI advancements.
