KUALA LUMPUR — In the wake of the loss of his wife, Tun Dr Hasmah Mohamad Ali, former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad received a visit from British singer-songwriter Yusuf Islam, known professionally as Cat Stevens. In a Facebook post, Islam shared that he recited Al-Fatihah alongside the 101-year-old former leader, praising her grace at such an advanced age.
Dr Mahathir, now 101, expressed gratitude for the resilience afforded by the visit. The gesture elicited praise from the public, with many commending the musician for providing solace during Dr Mahathir's time of mourning. Tun Hasmah's passing, at the National Heart Institute on September 28, marked the end of a 70-year marriage that was a cornerstone of Malaysian political history.
The couple wed in Kuala Lumpur on August 4, 1956, after meeting while pursuing medical studies in Singapore.
