The Aayalolo contra-flow system, implemented by the government to alleviate passenger congestion in Accra during peak hours, transports more than 8,000 passengers daily. This initiative, introduced on September 29, 2026, currently operates on three major corridors: Adenta, Amasaman, and Kasoa. According to Dawuda Awudu, Managing Director of GAPTE, the system has significantly improved mobility and saved commuters considerable time on their journeys.
Each Aayalolo bus can accommodate around 85 passengers, and with ten buses making multiple trips, the system can move over 8,000 passengers, reducing pressure on the roads and enhancing public transport access. Travel times have notably decreased; for instance, a journey from Adenta to the Central Business District (CBD) now takes about 28 minutes during the morning peak, compared to two hours previously, and 30 minutes in the evening instead of two-and-a-half hours.
Similarly, travel times from Amasaman to Accra have been reduced from over three hours to approximately 35 minutes in the morning and 40 minutes in the evening. Kasoa commuters can now complete their journeys in around 50 minutes. These improvements have benefited workers, traders, and students and have encouraged private vehicle owners to use the system to mitigate road congestion.
The success of the initiative is attributed to public compliance, which has increased due to extensive education and sensitization campaigns. GAPTE is currently evaluating the initial results before considering expanding the system to other corridors, contingent on safety considerations and the availability of additional buses. The expansion will depend on repairs and discussions with the sector minister, strengthening the fleet.
Awudu clarified that the initiative is a social intervention aimed at easing congestion in Greater Accra and enhancing mobility, rather than a profit-driven one. He urged commercial transport operators, private motorists, and other stakeholders to support the initiative, emphasizing its primary objective is to reduce congestion rather than displace trotro operators.
GAPTE remains committed to collaborating with transport and road safety authorities to enhance the service and make public transport more reliable.
