Defence Minister Khawaja Asif dismissed online trolls who mocked him for responding to an AI-generated riddle featuring Marilyn Monroe on social media platform X. The defence minister and PML-N veteran repurposed a post on X that asked users to spot the inauthentic element in a 1950s image of Monroe. Asif highlighted that Monroe was wearing a smartwatch in the image.
The original post by the defence minister has since been removed. Consequently, internet users raised questions about the appropriateness of the post, while Indian media covered Asif’s online activities. During an appearance on Geo News programme ‘Naya Pakistan’, Asif was questioned about the post and whether he personally managed his X account.
"A hundred percent, I operate it myself," he affirmed. "I lead a personal life and a normal life. I am a normal human being; there is nothing extraordinary about me," he asserted, stressing he had "no pretences". Asif clarified that while he served as the defence minister, he used his own account "for fun" and questioned: "Am I not Khawaja Asif? If I am the defence minister, should I abandon my identity — good or bad?"
