A 37-year-old man from Pakistan has been arrested in Melbourne on suspicion of attempting to traffic an Australian woman and her two young children. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) made the arrest after receiving a tip-off from the public on June 10. The woman and children were reportedly familiar to the suspect. Police intercepted the group at Melbourne Airport before they were due to leave for Pakistan.
During a search in Melbourne’s Glenroy suburb on October 9, officers seized a mobile phone, laptop, and documents for further examination. The man faces charges of organizing someone’s departure from Australia using coercion, threats, or deception, which could result in up to 12 years in prison. Detective Superintendent Ray Imbriano of the AFP emphasized the importance of timely information and cooperation with community partners in preventing such crimes.
He also encouraged anyone with concerns about potential human trafficking to report it to the authorities, as victims may be kept isolated or threatened into believing they have no options. The allegations have not yet been proven in a court of law.
