MyDigital ID Adopting Post-Quantum Cryptography To Take On Quantum Threats

MyDigital ID is steadily becoming integrated with numerous government services and digital platforms, with several key applications already relying on it as the sole login method. Naturally, given the national digital identity platform’s increasingly significant role in the average Malaysian’s day-to-day life, it needs to be futureproof, remaining secure in the face of evolving threats. MyDigital ID Adopting Post-Quantum Cryptography To Take On Quantum Threats

MyDigital ID, a government-backed digital identity platform in Malaysia, is enhancing its security measures to counter the potential threats posed by quantum computers. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed that the platform, which is already integrated with numerous government services and digital applications, will adopt Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats.

This move is part of a broader strategy known as crypto-agility, which allows for a flexible transition to new cryptographic algorithms while adhering to international standards and Malaysia's National Cryptography Policy.

In addition to PQC, MyDigital ID employs multiple layers of cryptographic security to protect its users' digital identities. These mechanisms include multi-factor authentication (MFA), Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and the SHA-256 hashing algorithm. MFA requires users to pass through several verification stages, reducing the likelihood of unauthorized access.

PKI verifies user identities during transactions and safeguards data from unauthorized modification. The SHA-256 algorithm ensures that confidential data is securely stored in hashed and encrypted forms, rather than plain text.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the multi-faceted approach to security, highlighting its role in maintaining data confidentiality and integrity. These efforts aim to mitigate risks associated with data breaches, fraud, impersonation, and identity theft. As of October 7, 2026, MyDigital ID has amassed 14.2 million registered users, with 82.75 million login transactions since 2024 and over 200,000 daily transactions.

The platform supports more than 200 applications and digital services, spanning both public and private sectors.
