IIT Kanpur has launched its Greater Than Us campaign, seeking $1 billion by March 2029. With ₹4,155 crore already committed, the drive will fund research facilities, student support and Indian-developed technologies through three pillars: Foundation, Talent and Frontier.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has initiated a groundbreaking $1 billion fundraising campaign, named "Greater Than Us," with the ambitious goal of raising the funds by March 2029. The institute claims it to be the largest fundraising endeavor undertaken by any IIT to date.
As of now, the campaign has garnered commitments worth ₹4,155 crore, constituting nearly half of the total target. The significant support has been rallied from various corners, including alumni, donors, corporate partners, and government entities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the campaign at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on October 14th.
The campaign is structured around three key areas: Foundation, Talent, and Frontier. The Foundation aims to raise ₹5,000 crore for research facilities and institutional growth, including a ₹524 crore Central Research Facility and a ₹160 crore semiconductor and device processing centre. Plans also include constructing four new student residences, each capable of housing 1,000 students, and establishing a mental health and wellbeing centre.
The Talent segment seeks ₹3,000 crore to support students, researchers, teachers, and entrepreneurs. This includes scholarships, doctoral fellowships, and programs to attract teachers from around the globe. The institute aims to provide financial aid to every eligible student and bolster its student entrepreneurship programme, supporting founders in defense, aerospace, healthcare, and clean technologies.
The Frontier area has already secured ₹1,556 crore, surpassing its initial goal of ₹1,000 crore. This area bridges fundamental research with practical technologies, such as quantum technology, semiconductor packaging, medical device development, and testing facilities. Additionally, a drug discovery programme focusing on cancer, metabolic conditions, and brain function diseases is being proposed.
Alumnus Rahul Gautam has pledged ₹180 crore to establish the Gautam School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at IIT Kanpur's Noida campus. The school, set to open in July 2027, will offer a unique MBA program in Technology and Entrepreneurship, focusing on areas like AI, cybersecurity, digital health, biotechnology, drones, and advanced manufacturing. The institute's incubator, SIIC, which has already supported 571 startups, will play a pivotal role in the school's operations.
