‘We will deliver the best championships in 2029,’ says Ruto as he hosts World Athletics President Coe

Kenyan President William Ruto has pledged to ensure the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi is a resounding success, according to a recent meeting with World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe. The meeting, held at Eldoret's Moi International Sports Centre in Uasin Gishu County, also saw participation from World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and his deputy Elijah Mwangi, Athletics Kenya President Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei, National Olympic Committee of Kenya's Deputy President Barnaba Korir, and government officials.

Ruto assured the World Athletics that the Kenyan government is fully committed to meeting all its obligations to host the event, which is set to take place at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani. He highlighted that major renovations are already underway at the venue, with additional upgrades planned ahead of the 2029 championship to meet the commitments of hosting the event.

The President also emphasized the importance of fighting doping and promoting clean sport, expressing his commitment to working alongside the World Anti-Doping Authority President to ensure a level playing field for athletes. This meeting marked the first time Coe and Ruto had convened since Kenya secured the bid to host the 22nd World Athletics Championships in September 2029, beating out bids from Rome and London.
