Singapore firm plans startup hub in Japan to bridge SE Asia and Tohoku

Singaporean venture capital firm Insignia Ventures Partners is planning to establish a startup hub in Iwate Prefecture, northeastern Japan, in partnership with the local government, according to reports by Kyodo News. The venture aims to develop startup talent in the region and bridge the gap between Southeast Asia and Japan. Insignia Ventures Partners, founded in 2017, has invested in over 90 companies across various markets, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, and Taiwan, with assets totaling 1 billion Singapore dollars.

The project seeks to attract international talent to the Tohoku region and increase investment in Japan from fast-growing Southeast Asian economies.

The Iwate prefectural government and Insignia Ventures Partners are expected to sign an agreement for the project at the Iwate International Convention on October 29-30 in Morioka, the prefectural capital. However, the opening date for the startup hub has not been finalized yet. Insignia Ventures Partners plans to establish an academy in Iwate Prefecture, serving as its first base outside Singapore.

The academy will offer in-person programs and train young people from Southeast Asia and Japan, integrating knowledge of Japanese business culture with an understanding of Southeast Asian markets.

Renovation subsidies for the project may be considered by the Iwate government, which plans to sell the 41,900-square-meter Towa High School property, closed in 2010, to the Singaporean firm. The chosen site, located in Hanamaki, is a transportation hub in the Tohoku region with Iwate Hanamaki Airport, Shin-Hanamaki Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line, and the Tohoku Expressway.

Tomokazu Sugawara, executive director of the Management Support Division of the Iwate prefectural government, acknowledged the need for infrastructure to accommodate prospective students and faculty from Singapore and other parts of the world.
