Pastor Otabil Slams ‘Women Need Rich Men To Succeed’ Narrative

Pastor Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has spoken out against the common theme in some African films that portrays wealthy men as essential for women's financial success and independence. In a recent video shared on social media, Otabil questioned why women consistently seek to marry rich men instead of focusing on achieving their own financial freedom.

He emphasized that the expectation of marrying a wealthy partner implies that women are unable to become financially independent themselves. "If the man doesn’t have money, I don’t have time for him. But you have time for yourself. You have time for your broke self," Otabil stated.

Additionally, Otabil criticized the African narrative that suggests women require a wealthy man to overcome their financial limitations. He dismissed this idea as "African nonsense" and urged women not to accept such a notion. Otabil encouraged women to strive for financial independence, asserting that they have the capability to overcome their limitations and achieve success on their own. "By your God, you can rise above limitations. You can succeed by yourself. You can buy your iPhone 15 by yourself," he added.

Otabil's remarks have brought attention to the depiction of wealth, relationships, and women's independence in African film narratives, particularly in stories that portray marriage to a wealthy man as a means to escape poverty.
