Qantas flight grounded after bedbug outbreak

A Qantas flight was grounded on Saturday following a bedbug outbreak, according to the BBC. The incident occurred after a 17-hour journey from Perth to Rome, where some passengers reported being bitten by bugs, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald. Passengers were given antihistamines to alleviate the itch, but supplies were depleted.

Consequently, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner underwent a thorough cleaning before being grounded for the cancellation of the subsequent Rome to Perth service. The airline expressed regret for the cancellation, stating that engineers and maintenance teams conducted a deep clean of the aircraft after identifying the issue on a few economy seats.

All affected customers were given accommodation and rebooked on alternative flights within 48 hours of their original departure. Bedbugs are small, wingless insects that can infest clothes, furniture, and bedding. While their bites are typically itchy, they usually do not lead to serious health issues. However, they are notoriously challenging and costly to eradicate.

Treatment options include hot washing and tumble drying all bedding, clothing, and household items, or placing them in plastic bags in a freezer for several days. Bedbug-related travel disruptions are not uncommon - less than two weeks prior, multiple Southeastern train services in England were canceled due to the presence of bedbugs in drivers' vehicles.

Earlier this year, British Airways apologized to a family traveling from Vancouver to London for bug bites they sustained during an overnight flight. Additionally, Turkish Airlines faced a public relations crisis last year after several instances of bedbug infestations on its planes were reported, along with allegations that the airline failed to address the problem.
