Zara Qairina Mahathir passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 17, 2025, one day after being found unconscious near her school hostel's gate in the early morning hours. Her mother, Noraidah Lamat, informed the Coroner's Court that she agreed with the medical expert's explanation that her daughter's backside bloating, observed during her post-mortem examination, was not due to being punched, but rather caused by blood clotting.

On August 10 of the previous year, after expressing concerns that the bloating might have been caused by a blow with a blunt object, Noraidah was informed by a doctor of this fact. When questioned by counsel Abdul Fikry Jaafar Abdullah if the bloating was not a result of punching but rather blood clotting, as claimed by her family's legal counsel on August 3, Noraidah confirmed: "Yes sir."

She also admitted that no doctor who treated Zara Qairina had previously confirmed to her any injury caused by being punched with a blunt object, as claimed in a media statement issued by her family's lawyer on August 3. However, Noraidah explained that the media statement was issued in the interim police report made at IPD Sipitang to seek further investigation into the cause of her daughter's bloating on July 17, 2025.

She stated that this step was taken because her family had not yet received any clear explanation from the investigators about the true condition that affected Zara, leading to various doubts about her death. Noraidah also informed the court that she never concluded on her own that her son had been punched with a blunt object, but rather handed over this matter to the authorities for investigation.
