Mercedes boss Wolff slams 'brainless' claims team would favor Antonelli over Russell

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has dismissed claims that the team would favor Kimi Antonelli over George Russell in the Formula 1 title race, calling them "brainless." This comes after Russell's engine failure at the Bahrain Grand Prix last week put Antonelli in a strong position to become the youngest F1 champion in history.

Wolff explained that any suggestion the team would disadvantage one driver over another is "completely nonsensical" and that Mercedes has always operated under the principle of providing equal material to all drivers. The team principal also dismissed social media criticism, stating he finds it funny to be painted as a villain but frustrating to be criticized by fans who show little understanding of his and Russell's relationship off the track.

Russell's engine issue in Malaysia resulted in a grid penalty for Singapore, dropping him 84 points behind Antonelli, who could potentially win the title at the United States Grand Prix if other results go his way. Despite Russell's determination to "attack" this week, Wolff reaffirmed the team's strategy of favoring the quicker driver at any given time, emphasizing their commitment to equal opportunities for both drivers since 2013.
