Battle intensifies for Real Madrid starting spot in key position with El Clasico in sight

As Real Madrid prepares for a pivotal El Clasico against Barcelona on October 25, the battle for the starting position of their right-back is heating up between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries. Jose Mourinho faces a challenging decision in choosing the right player to lead the defense against one of the world's biggest rivals.

Currently, Dumfries has more playing time with 505 minutes compared to Trent's 292, but Mourinho's rotating approach means the competition is far from over. Both players have the chance to strengthen their case during a busy run of fixtures starting with Villarreal at the Bernabeu. Dumfries returned from international duty with a significant workload, starting all four matches for the Netherlands.

In contrast, Trent's international break followed a different trajectory after being omitted from England's World Cup squad. He has since played two matches for the national team, contributing an assist and showcasing his passing range. Despite having 170 fewer minutes played than Dumfries, Trent could secure a starting spot against Villarreal and use that opportunity to close the gap before the high-stakes El Clasico.

For Mourinho, the right-back choice for Barcelona will be crucial, as the chosen player must contain Lamine Yamal's attacking threat. Dumfries has the advantage in minutes, while Trent brings valuable experience in possession and a different dimension to the position. Ultimately, Mourinho holds the key to deciding which player will don the starting jersey against Barcelona.
