Microsoft Launches Its First RTX Spark Laptop — Surface Laptop Ultra

Microsoft has officially introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra, its most powerful laptop yet, and the first to incorporate Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform for AI tasks. Designed for developers, creators, and AI researchers, the device aims to deliver workstation-level performance in a portable format.

The laptop sports a 15-inch Mini-LED touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio and can reach up to 2,000 nits of brightness. It also boasts a haptic touchpad, which is approximately 30% larger than those on most 15-inch Surface laptops.

Under the hood, the Surface Laptop Ultra relies on Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform, featuring either an 18-core or 20-core CPU. The graphics leverage Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture, with up to 6,144 GPU cores. The system supports up to 128GB of unified memory, with the capability to deliver up to one petaflop of AI compute. Microsoft emphasizes the laptop’s strength in handling local AI workloads, enabling powerful AI models and agentic tasks to run directly on the device rather than solely in the cloud.

Storage options range from 512GB to 2TB, with the SSD being user-replaceable or upgradable. The laptop is slim at 18mm and weighs about 4.5 pounds. Connectivity features include USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, a 3.5mm audio jack, and an SD card reader. A new Magnetic Connect port supports power, data, and video transmission.

Pre-orders have opened, with the Surface Laptop Ultra expected to ship starting October 16. Pricing starts at $2,599.99 for a configuration with 24GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, going up to $5,899.99 for a model equipped with 128GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The Surface Laptop Ultra is positioned as a professional-grade device for users who demand high local computing power and AI capabilities beyond what a standard everyday laptop offers.
