Kericho: Tengecha Boys High School’s dormitory on fire

A fire erupted at Tengecha Boys High School in Kericho County on Sunday evening, October 4, 2026, engulfing one of the school's dormitories. Footage from the school shows intense flames and thick smoke billowing from the dormitory as emergency responders rushed to the scene. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported in this incident.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess the extent of the damage caused to the dormitory. Reports from the scene suggest that the fire has been brought under control, and all students have been accounted for. Neighbors from the Kapkatet community also rallied to assist the school staff and students, helping to remove learners' belongings from the affected building.

This incident has reignited discussions on fire safety in Kenyan boarding schools, following the deadly Utumishi Girls fire in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which occurred in May 2026. The Utumishi Girls fire claimed the lives of sixteen learners, leading to heightened scrutiny of fire preparedness and safety standards in boarding schools across the country.

In response, education and government officials were urged to strengthen compliance with safety standards covering dormitories, emergency exits, firefighting equipment, and evacuation procedures.

The latest fire at Tengecha Boys is likely to reignite concerns about fire safety in boarding schools as authorities endeavor to determine the cause of Sunday's blaze. The full extent of the damage to the dormitory has yet to be established.
