Nigeria produces less than quarter of fish it needs — Farmers

Nigeria currently produces less than a quarter of the 300,000 metric tonnes of fish it requires each year, according to the President of the National Fish Association of Nigeria, Ladan Aliyu. Aliyu urged fish farmers to form sustainable cooperative societies, boost production capacity, and collaborate with the government to access essential inputs, training, and supportive policies.

Fish imports currently supply half of the needed production. The association's inauguration, held in Abuja, saw industry stakeholders express concerns over inadequate domestic production, rising fish prices, and the high cost of imported frozen fish. Aliyu emphasized the importance of domestic fish farming over heavy reliance on imports to meet Nigeria's protein needs.
