Firefox 157: Could bold new look be just what Mozilla needs?*

Firefox 157 has arrived, and Mozilla is generating considerable buzz around this release and its fresh new look. The centerpiece of this update is a major visual refresh dubbed "Nova." Apart from this, the enhancements are relatively minor. Features such as hardware-accelerated video calls via WebRTC, a corrected issue causing video to appear upside down, and improved functionality of Firefox Suggest in 16 additional European countries are included.

Notably, typing in a new tab or window now directs you straight to the search box, rather than the selection of a search engine (although pressing Shift+Tab will return you to the engine option). This change aims to minimize stress for users, particularly those who frequently use the Reg FOSS desk. The sidebar has been updated for greater customization, with an option to disable the new version and hide vertical tabs.

However, the ability to show or hide the sidebar has been removed from the Settings screen, which may disappoint those who prefer more control over their browsing experience. While the enhanced privacy, reduced snooping, and global AI off-switch are noteworthy additions, some users might find the visual changes less appealing. The rounded tabs and buttons, though a slight improvement, seem to mirror the appearance of Mozilla's previous Australis theme, which proved unpopular in 2013 and led to the creation of Palemoon and Basilisk.

The toolbar customization dialog now offers "Compact" as a layout density, a feature previously missing. Additionally, Mozilla has sponsored Wrexham AFC, a football club with a rich history dating back to 1864, commonly recognized as the third-oldest football club globally. The club, now owned by American actor Rob Mac and Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, recently received this sponsorship deal, reflecting significant changes within the club since 2020.
