FG plans 24-hour power zones in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, others

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated discussions with electricity distribution companies to establish 24-hour power zones in key demand centers across the country. The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, convened a closed-door meeting with leaders of select distribution companies to deliberate on the proposed Energy Zones, which are intended to ensure a consistent, uninterrupted electricity supply for homes, businesses, and industries in high-demand regions.

The covered areas include the Lagos axis, the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, and the Enugu-Port Harcourt corridor. According to the minister, the initiative aims to tackle distribution challenges and deliver reliable electricity to regions with significant commercial and industrial activity. The meeting took place in accordance with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes electricity supply as a cornerstone for economic growth, industrialization, and job creation.

The participating distribution companies were Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric, Eko Power, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, and Sahara Energy Group. The Energy Zones are part of a phased approach to addressing long-standing sectoral issues, though the implementation timeline, capacity, and required infrastructure investments have yet to be disclosed.
