FG plans 24-hour power zones in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, others

The Federal Government of Nigeria is planning to establish 24-hour power zones in key cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Kano, among others. The move is aimed at ensuring a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply to homes, businesses, and industries in high-demand areas. This initiative follows a meeting between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and leaders of selected electricity distribution companies.

The proposed Energy Zones are designed to address distribution constraints and improve the reliability of power delivery, particularly in areas with high commercial and industrial demand. The minister emphasized that the challenges facing the power sector go beyond electricity generation and transmission, and also include the distribution end, where power is taken up and delivered to end-users.

The Energy Zones are expected to help close the gap, boost commercial and industrial demand, and enhance the revenue and collection performance of distribution companies. The implementation details, including the timeline, projected capacity, and required infrastructure investments, have not been disclosed.
