California, a state in the United States, has officially recognized two significant Islamic holidays, Aidilfitri and Aidiladha, as public holidays under new legislation signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, reports Anadolu Agency. The 2017 Assembly Bill, approved on Sunday, officially incorporated these two major Islamic celebrations into the state's official public holiday calendar.

Aidilfitri marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims, while Aidiladha is observed during the peak of the annual Hajj pilgrimage season. Consequently, under this legislation, both public and private schools are entitled to a holiday on these occasions through existing procedures, while eligible public employees may also receive holiday accommodations.

The recognition of Aidilfitri and Aidiladha as public holidays is a civil calendar entry acknowledging the importance of these celebrations to the community in California, according to the legislation.
