Late Australian Army officer named Korean War hero of Oct.

Late Australian Army officer Lt. Col. Charles Green has been posthumously recognized as the Korean War hero of the month for October, according to the Korean veterans ministry. Green, who served as the commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment, played a crucial role in the conflict that lasted from 1950 to 1953.

Following the outbreak of the war in June 1950, Green led his battalion to South Korea's southeastern port city of Busan in September, where they joined the Allied forces under the U.N. flag. The battalion advanced northward, securing the North Korean cities of Kaesong and Sariwon in October, and entered Pyongyang after successfully capturing Kaesong and Sariwon.

Green's leadership was instrumental in their victory at Chongju in late October, after a fierce battle in North Phyongan Province. His clear and decisive orders transformed his unit into a formidable fighting force in a short period, making him a hero in the eyes of his comrades.

Green's service was recognized in July 2019 when he was posthumously awarded the Eulji Order of Military Merit. He passed away in November 1950 at the age of 30, critically wounded during operations in Chongju.
