Bunkpurugu MP urges action to curb network disruptions in Northern Ghana

Dr. Abednego A. Lamangin Bandim, the Member of Parliament for Bunkpurugu Constituency, has called for action from telecommunication operators to address frequent network disruptions in Northern Ghana. He also urged the National Communications Authority (NCA) to closely monitor and address the frequency and duration of these disruptions, ensuring service providers fulfill their obligations to consumers.

In an Accra statement, Bandim, who chairs Parliament’s Information and Communications Committee, emphasized that network outages could severely impact healthcare, education, businesses, emergency response, and public safety. He highlighted his personal experience of a major MTN network disruption on September 26, 2026, which lasted from 1100 hours to 1800 hours.

Reports also indicated similar disruptions affecting numerous Northern communities, including Damango and Bunkpurugu. While acknowledging that unforeseen technical issues, such as fibre cuts, can occur, Bandim stressed that operators must still communicate with affected consumers. He argued that the lack of timely communication is unacceptable, even when advance notice is not possible, suggesting that operators can use alternative platforms to inform the public when SMS communication is not feasible.

Bandim urged operators to prioritize consumers and improve communication protocols, ensuring affected individuals are promptly informed about disruptions, their causes, and restoration efforts. He also appealed to the NCA to closely monitor network disruptions, particularly in Northern Ghana, and ensure service providers meet their obligations.

Bandim pledged to remain vigilant and collaborate with stakeholders to identify the root causes of these disruptions and implement preventive measures. He emphasized that reliable telecommunications services are now essential for various aspects of life, including healthcare, education, commerce, emergency response, and daily activities, and called for urgent attention from all stakeholders to ensure Northern Ghana receives dependable services and timely information during disruptions.
