Black Stars crisis requires football system reset, not just change of coach - Minority

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to face parliamentary questioning concerning the state of Ghana football following the Black Stars' disappointing performance in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. This comes amid growing concerns over the team's underwhelming start to their qualification campaign. Ernest Henry Norgbey, chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth and Sports, has confirmed that the committee will engage the GFA in an investigation.

Ghana has lost both of their Group C qualifiers thus far, failing to secure a single point in their bid to reach the 2027 AFCON. The team's opening match ended in a 2-0 defeat to Côte d'Ivoire, followed by a more alarming 4-2 loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium. Despite appearing to lead after taking a two-goal advantage, Ghana's lead was ultimately extinguished as The Gambia scored four goals in a dramatic comeback.

The Black Stars' poor performance has sparked criticism of both coach Carlos Queiroz and the GFA's management of the national team. Norgbey, who represents Ashaiman in Parliament, stated that the committee will summon the football governing body to discuss the wider issues surrounding Ghana's sports scene. The Black Stars will now need to demonstrate significant improvement in their remaining Group C matches to keep their hopes of qualifying for the AFCON alive.

The team are scheduled to face Somalia twice in October, providing an opportunity to revive their qualification hopes. Ghana has not qualified for the AFCON since 2025, ending a two-decade streak of consecutive appearances at the tournament.
