I took a 15-hour Amtrak train from Colorado to Utah. Here's how I spent every hour, from boarding to bedtime.

On a frosty January day in 2025, Business Insider reporter Joey Hadden embarked on a 15-hour Amtrak journey from Denver, Colorado, to Salt Lake City, Utah, opting for an overnight sleeper train over air travel. As part of a Business Insider series, Hadden documented his experiences during the entire trip.

Upon arrival at Denver's Union Station, Hadden secured a roomette, a 23-square-foot sleeper cabin priced at $400, in the first-floor sleeper car. The roomette featured two seats that folded out into a bed and another lower bunk, a fold-out table, a shelf, a mirror, and a closet. Shared bathrooms and a shower were available within the sleeper car, with meals included in the ticket fare.

Hadden's day began at 8:30 a.m. as the train departed for Salt Lake City. Breakfast was served at 9 a.m., and Hadden chose French toast with sausage and fresh strawberries, remarking on its fluffiness and the strawberries' freshness. The train, an Amtrak Superliner with two stories, included coach and first-class sleeper cars, a dining car, and an observation car.

For the first two hours of the journey, Hadden enjoyed the scenic views of Colorado's mountains and forests. He found the cabin comfortable, with cushy seats and a reclining option. The train was quiet and social, with fellow passengers engaging in conversation, especially after breakfast.

In the afternoon, Hadden took a break in Fraser, Colorado, and appreciated the fresh mountain air. He noted the diverse group of travelers, from those with lengthy overnight trips to those with shorter journeys. Once the train resumed, Hadden headed to the second-floor observation car to soak in the panoramic views. Despite the lack of WiFi, the natural beauty outside kept Hadden engaged throughout the 15-hour train ride.
