AI is now SI: Trump makes 'Super Intelligence' official alongside top AI bosses

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday, officially renaming "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" to "super intelligence" and "SI" across federal government operations. The order, titled "Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence," mandates federal departments and agencies to use these new terms in official communications, websites, reports, and policy documents, unless prohibited by law.

The change will not apply retroactively to existing regulations, contracts, grants, or historical records. The administration claims that modern frontier systems have evolved beyond the original concept of artificial intelligence, now amplifying human ingenuity and unlocking new forms of creativity across various domains. The new terminology is intended to better reflect these expanded capabilities.

The order gives the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology 60 days to submit proposed legislation to Congress, which is expected to establish a federal statutory definition of "super intelligence" and suggest changes to existing US laws. The executive order follows a White House luncheon with top technology executives, during which Trump described the shift as an unprecedented opportunity for the US, emphasizing its significance as "maybe the biggest thing there s ever been."
