Trump releases AI accord with tech executives

WASHINGTON, September 29 - President Donald Trump unveiled an artificial intelligence accord on Tuesday, touting it as a morally binding agreement signed with tech industry leaders. The one-page document, published on Trump's Truth Social platform, outlined four layers of controls for companies developing AI technology.

Firstly, the accord called for companies to partner with an external auditor or evaluator to conduct independent assessments of their AI control and monitoring systems. Secondly, it recommended that companies establish an independent committee within their board of directors to oversee these controls and receive reports from both internal and external auditors, as well as teams operating AI controls.

Thirdly, the accord emphasized the importance of internal controls to monitor AI model capabilities and alignment during both training and deployment phases. This was particularly focused on ensuring that AI models do not pose cybersecurity, biosecurity, or chemical threats. Lastly, the document stressed the need for an internal team to verify that all controls, monitoring, and detection measures are functioning as intended.

The White House accord was signed by Trump and the CEOs of Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, social media platform X, and NVIDIA. The White House further stated that, over time, it might be worthwhile to codify these steps into laws or regulations. However, the accord emphasized that implementing these controls and audits is critical to ensuring a safe future for everyone, and each of the participating companies is committed to doing so.

The companies involved agreed to meet regularly to establish standards and best practices aimed at enhancing the safety of their AI systems.
