2027: Police pledge to protect lives, ensure secure environment for voters

The Nigeria Police Force has pledged to safeguard lives and property, and ensure a secure environment for Nigerians to exercise their democratic rights during the 2027 general elections. Inspector-General Tunji Disu made this commitment at a workshop organized by the FCT Nigerian Union of Journalists. Disu emphasized that the police would maintain law and order and provide a safe environment for citizens to vote.

He praised journalists as crucial partners in election security, highlighting their responsibility to verify information before publication, especially sensitive security reports that could incite fear or confrontation. Disu cautioned against the rapid spread of false information through social media, citing videos, statements, and AI-generated content as challenges for election reporting.

He urged journalists to obtain authoritative information, verify security alerts, and contact each other when discrepancies arise. The police chief assured that the Nigeria Police Force would remain accessible, transparent, and responsive to legitimate media inquiries. He also stressed the importance of post-election stability, urging journalists to report responsibly before, during, and after the elections, and noting that the period after the polls could be just as sensitive as Election Day.
