TQWL on your train ticket: What it means, confirmation chances and boarding rules

When you book a Tatkal train ticket and see "TQWL" on your confirmation, it means your ticket is placed on the Tatkal Quota Waiting List. Tatkal tickets are typically used by passengers needing to travel at short notice. Rikant Pittie, CEO of EaseMyTrip, explains that once all confirmed seats under the Tatkal quota are exhausted, bookings move to the Tatkal waiting list.

This waiting list has the lowest chance of confirmation compared to other waiting-list categories such as GNWL, RLWL, and PQWL. While your TQWL ticket can potentially get confirmed if a seat becomes available, it is not guaranteed. Your ticket will not get confirmed if you cancel, as confirmed Tatkal tickets usually do not qualify for a refund.

To travel on a TQWL ticket, your online ticket must remain waitlisted after chart preparation, otherwise it will automatically be cancelled. If you travel without a valid reservation, you could be treated as a ticketless passenger. Misconceptions about TQWL include assuming it automatically upgrades to RAC or gets priority for vacant seats, neither of which are true.

To avoid issues, always check your final PNR status before heading to the station to ensure it shows Confirmed or RAC.
