Man dragged to death by NYC subway train after bag snags on door, police say

A 57-year-old Brooklyn man, identified as Yaw Boahene, was tragically dragged to his death by a New York City subway train on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. as Boahene was exiting a train at a Brooklyn subway station. The cause of the fatal accident was a shopping bag he was carrying becoming entangled in the closing train doors.

As the train pulled away from the station, the man was dragged onto the tracks and run over, leaving him unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency responders found him on the tracks and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death. The police investigation into the incident is currently underway.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the subway system, has referred all inquiries about the incident to the police. Dragging deaths are rare occurrences in New York City's extensive subway network. In 2022, a 20-year-old commuter also met a similar fate after his backpack or clothing became lodged in the door while attempting to board a train at the Columbus Circle station in upper Manhattan.
