Singapore police charge man after fake AI croc picture sparks concern

Singaporean authorities charged a 30-year-old man from Myanmar on Tuesday for posting a fake AI-generated image of a crocodile in the city-state's largest reservoir, prompting public alarm and an extensive search. Singapore police accused the man, identified as Ye Lin, of creating the picture using artificial intelligence and disseminating it to a colleague last month.

Authorities were alerted to the potential presence of a dangerous predator at Pandan Reservoir, a popular jogging and kayaking location west of the city center. An extensive search was initiated, suspending all activities in the area. However, it was later discovered that the photograph related to the reported sighting was fabricated, leading to the matter being referred to the police.

The individual subsequently removed the image and the associated application to attempt to cover his tracks. Ye Lin appeared in a Singapore court on Tuesday via an interpreter and indicated his intention to plead guilty, as reported by the Straits Times. Singapore has a strict stance on the distribution of false images. If found guilty, Ye Lin could be sentenced to up to three years in prison or a fine of S$10,000 (approximately US$7,820), or both.

He also faces an additional charge of obstruction of justice, which could result in up to seven years in prison or a fine, or both. Ye Lin is scheduled to return to court in November. While crocodile sightings are uncommon in Singapore, there has been a recent increase in reports, with around 30 sightings recorded in its waters since January 2025, according to local media reports.
