Singapore’s police charge man after fake AI croc picture sparks concern

Singapore's police have charged a man with posting a fake AI-generated image of a crocodile in one of the city-state's largest reservoirs, sparking public concern and an extensive search. Ye Lin, a 30-year-old citizen from Myanmar, was charged with falsely communicating a message and obstructing justice. According to police, Ye created the image of a saltwater crocodile using artificial intelligence last month before sending it to a colleague.

Authorities received an alert about the potential presence of a dangerous predator at Pandan Reservoir, a popular jogging and kayaking area west of the city center. An intensive search ensued, and all activities were suspended until it was confirmed that the photograph was fabricated. Ye subsequently deleted the image and the associated application to hide his actions.

In court, Ye expressed his intention to plead guilty to the charges, according to the Straits Times. Singapore imposes strict penalties for the dissemination of fake images, and Ye faces up to three years in prison, a fine of US$7,820 (S$10,000), or both if convicted. He also risks a seven-year prison term or a fine, or both, for the obstruction of justice charge.

Ye is set to appear in court again in November. Crocodile sightings in Singapore are rare but have been on the rise in recent years, with around 30 reported in its waters since January 2025, according to local media reports.
