How to Turn Your Android Phone Into a Mini Desktop PC

Google has introduced Android Desktop Mode on Pixel 8 and newer phones with Android 16, allowing these devices to function like mini desktop PCs when connected to an external monitor through a high-speed USB-C cable. This feature, part of the base Android experience, may soon be available on other Android phones as well. Desktop Mode opens a desktop-like workspace, where apps open inside resizable windows and can be controlled using a keyboard and mouse connected via Bluetooth or a USB hub. Notifications are still accessible by pulling down from the top of the interface.

This feature builds upon past attempts from smartphone manufacturers to turn phones into desktop replacements, including Asus' PadFone, Motorola's Atrix Lapdock, Microsoft Continuum, Samsung DeX, and Motorola Smart Connect. To use Android Desktop Mode, connect the Pixel 8 or newer phone to an external monitor, then choose between mirroring the phone's display or switching to Desktop Mode.

Apps launched in Desktop Mode can be arranged and managed using a Start menu, which provides access to the App Drawer. However, most Android games don't support keyboard input and may struggle with more demanding tasks, such as photo editing, due to limitations like 60Hz output and lack of 4K resolution support.

Despite these limitations, Android Desktop Mode provides Pixel phone users with a built-in way to enjoy a desktop-style workspace through an external display. While Google has not announced plans to bring Desktop Mode to non-Pixel Android devices, it's possible that other manufacturers may adopt this feature or improve upon it in future software updates.
