Google Maps satellite images reveal 82% destruction in Gaza

New Google Earth satellite images reveal the devastating impact of Israel's military offensive on Gaza. The updated imagery, published on Sunday, showcases vast areas transformed into rubble and bare ground, with entire districts reduced to destruction. Nathan Ruser, an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, described the images as "shocking resolution" that unveils the reality of Gaza.

The southern city of Rafah is prominently featured in the latest satellite images, with areas that once housed dense rows of homes now largely cleared. Gaza city also exhibits extensive damage, particularly around Al Shifa Hospital. The surrounding urban landscape appears significantly altered compared to previous imagery.

UN Satellite Centre's report published on August 12 stated that 82% of all Gaza structures had been damaged, with two-thirds destroyed. Barry Andrews, an Irish Member of the European Parliament, shared the images on X, calling them "incredible" for all to see. The post garnered significant attention, with over two million views and thousands of reposts.

Palestinian journalist Abubaker Abed described the imagery as "truly unfathomable," reflecting the scale of destruction resulting from nearly three years of war and intense Israeli bombardment since October 7, 2023. The images show the aftermath of Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and took around 250 hostages.

Israel's military response has killed over 74,000 Palestinians, injured tens of thousands more, and been accused of war crimes, including attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, forced displacement, and restrictions on humanitarian aid. Israel denies these allegations.
