Ghana reaffirms commitment to maritime safety and sustainability

Ghana has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a safer, more efficient, and sustainable maritime sector to fuel the nation's economic expansion. This commitment was underscored during the observance of this year's World Maritime Day at the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) headquarters in Accra. The event convened the Transport Minister, GMA Director-General, Ministry of Transport officials, and other stakeholders to deliberate on the industry's role in national progress.

Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Deputy Transport Minister, emphasized the necessity of enhanced collaboration among government agencies, regulatory bodies, industry participants, and other relevant parties to tackle obstacles and capitalize on prospects within the sector. She underscored that a robust maritime industry hinges on a unified dedication to safety, operational efficiency, innovation, and environmental stewardship.

Affo-Toffey stressed that cooperative efforts would enable Ghana to leverage its maritime resources and elevate the sector's impact on Ghana's economic metamorphosis.

The Deputy Minister also underscored the significance of bolstering maritime safety and security, fortifying regulatory frameworks, and advocating for environmentally sound practices. She affirmed that establishing a conducive atmosphere for investment and growth is crucial for cultivating a maritime industry capable of addressing Ghana's developmental requisites.

The commemoration offered a platform for stakeholders to assess emerging trends, challenges, and prospects in the international maritime realm and deliberate on how Ghana could adapt to sectoral shifts. The GMA, responsible for regulating the maritime industry, plays a pivotal role in advancing safety, security, environmental preservation, and Ghana's maritime interests.

Affo-Toffey, also a Member of Parliament for Jomoro in the Western Region, lauded the GMA, the Ministry of Transport, and other industry players for their ongoing endeavors to bolster the sector. She reiterated that nurturing a stronger maritime industry necessitates continuous partnerships and a collective sense of duty among all stakeholders.

The event concluded with a reaffirmed call for collaborative efforts to ensure Ghana's maritime sector remains secure, efficient, and sustainable while contributing to national economic advancement.
