Floodwaters recede in Hohoe as residents begin returning home – NADMO

The flood situation in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region is improving as floodwaters recede and residents begin returning to their homes, according to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). Volta Regional Director Pascal Agbagba reported that the waters have receded, enabling displaced individuals who had sought refuge with relatives or at safe havens to move back into their houses.

As of now, more than 3,000 residents have been impacted by the flooding, with over 400 homes affected and the Zongo community among the worst hit, with more than half of the area submerged.

To address the crisis, NADMO has established safe havens at the Adabraka and Nima Mosques, accommodating over 270 displaced persons. The organization provided essential relief items such as 100 mattresses, 50 bags of rice, cooking oil, mosquito nets, mosquito repellents, cups, plates, and buckets to aid in the immediate response.

These supplies serve as a temporary measure until NADMO's national office prepares further aid following a comprehensive assessment of the affected areas. Mr. Agbagba stated that the total number of people affected by the flooding has reached approximately 5,000, although a more accurate figure will become available after a detailed needs assessment.

Additionally, the Ghana National Fire Service is assisting in providing access to clean water in some of the challenging areas impacted by the disaster.
