Fernando Alonso commits for 2027 to Aston Martin, ending doubts over his F1 future

SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Veteran Fernando Alonso extended his Formula 1 career with Aston Martin through 2027, quelling doubts about his future in the sport. The 45-year-old champion and his teammate Lance Stroll both inked long-term contracts, the team announced on Tuesday. Despite his recent hint of possibly focusing on the World Endurance Championship instead of F1, Alonso expressed his happiness with the agreement, stating that racing remains his life and passion.

He remains confident in his abilities, promising to compete at the highest level with Aston Martin. The driver acknowledged the challenges posed by the 2026 cars' heavy reliance on electrical power, a concern shared by many drivers, including Max Verstappen who contemplated leaving F1 if changes weren't implemented. Despite the team's struggle with the new regulations, Alonso expressed trust in Aston Martin's leadership and resources.

"I look forward to making more memories on the racetrack in front of the passionate fans," he said. In the current season, Alonso has secured only three points from 15 races, with his best finish being ninth place in August's Dutch Grand Prix.
