Belgium rushes three F-16s to Ukraine as Russia expands its drone and missile assault

Belgium is rapidly sending three F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by the end of 2026, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The move comes amid Russia's intensifying missile and drone assaults on Ukrainian cities. Zelenskyy explained that the aircraft will be delivered through an expedited procedure, as Russia's aerial campaign is placing additional strain on Ukraine's limited air-defense capabilities.

Ukraine has already received urgent F-16 ammunition and other support from Belgium and other partners, including Spain. Zelenskyy emphasized that the new jets are crucial for countering Russia's aerial attacks and protecting civilians.

The F-16s, which Ukraine first received in 2024 after an 18-month international effort, are primarily used to intercept Russian cruise missiles and attack drones. They also play a role in electronic warfare and other missions. In January 2025, a Ukrainian F-16 pilot successfully shot down six Russian cruise missiles in a single mission.

In addition to intercepting targets, the jets can carry precision-guided bombs and air-to-air missiles, enabling them to support strikes against Russian forces and other objectives near the frontline. Ukrainian pilots have developed tactics to effectively utilize the F-16s, even under Russia's robust air-defense network. This additional aircraft not only offers another layer of defense against Russia's expanding aerial attacks but also enhances Ukraine's combat capabilities on the front lines.
