Women gunned down at Plateau mining site

On Monday, a violent attack at a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulted in the deaths of three women and an injury to another individual. The assailants, who struck the scene around 4:30pm, engaged in a gunfight with workers before fleeing the area. This incident occurred amidst escalating tensions, with numerous farmers and herders losing their lives in separate attacks in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, and Bokkos.

The government subsequently imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in these regions. Rwang Tengwong, a spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, confirmed the attack, expressing deep concern over the safety of those in the area. "We are calling on the security operatives to immediately pursue the perpetrators and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and held accountable," Tengwong stated.

John Silas, a resident of the affected community, also verified the incident, detailing how the attackers arrived at the mining site during the evening hours and commenced firing at the workers. Silas lamented that the occurrence further exacerbates the community's worries about the security of their daily activities. The state government, in a bid to maintain calm, urged the populace to remain peaceful and abide by the law, assuring that it is collaborating with security agencies to safeguard lives and property in the state.
