UK Grid Operator Warns of Tight Power Margins

The UK's power grid operator has issued a warning of tight power margins on Monday evening, according to a routine notice. This is the latest in a series of such alerts during the spring and summer months as record heatwaves have prompted the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to request more electricity availability from generators due to low wind speeds.

An Electricity Margin Notice is a precautionary tool to encourage market actions to increase the energy system's safety margin between power demand and supply. However, NESO emphasized that there is no risk to customer electricity supplies, and the Great Britain's electricity system remains secure. The notice is issued to signal that NESO would like a greater safety cushion to prevent any short-term margin shortfall.

Wind power, which supplied nearly 30% of the UK's electricity last year, is expected to increase and alleviate the current shortfall by the night between Monday and Tuesday. When wind speeds are high, the UK generates about 44% of its total electricity from wind, but gas becomes the backup in case of low wind speeds. As renewable energy sources like wind and solar generate a growing share of the UK's electricity, billions of pounds in investments will be required to expand and upgrade grids to accommodate this renewable energy without forcing generators to curtail output.
