Thailand floods: At least 8 die, thousands move to shelters

Severe weather is causing significant loss of life across Thailand and Myanmar, with at least eight fatalities reported. In Thailand, the floods have affected over five hundred thousand households and one point seven million people in 27 provinces since mid-September, particularly hard-hit provinces since September 16. The capital city, Bangkok, has been under water for a fourth day, with schools closed and authorities urging people to work from home where possible.

More than eighty thousand people are trapped in their homes due to the flooding, and the interior ministry confirmed that Nattapon Mankean, a resident of eastern Bangkok, had to flee with his girlfriend and two cats as his apartment complex had no electricity or water.

Myanmar has also suffered from the heavy rains, with at least eight people dead in the southern region of Tanintharyi. Rescuers reported that between twenty to thirty people are still missing, including three teenagers who were swept away by a landslide that buried eighteen buildings in Launglon township. The floods and landslides have complicated relief efforts due to Myanmar's ongoing civil war, making it difficult for humanitarian organizations to assess the scale of the disaster and deliver aid.

With September being the peak of Thailand's rainy season, the current floods are more severe than previous ones. The city's waterlogged canals and pumping stations are struggling to cope, and the governor of Bangkok stated that it could take up to a week for the waters to fully recede. Thousands of residents have been relocated to temporary shelters while the authorities continue to monitor the situation.
