Ayalolo BRT to get contra-flow lanes on three major Accra corridors

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has initiated a contra-flow arrangement for Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit services on three main routes leading into Accra's Central Business District. This new measure begins on Tuesday, September 29, and will be in place during peak commuting times, from 6 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 8 pm.

The three roads affected are Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra, and Kasoa–Accra, all of which experience heavy traffic during peak hours. The plan involves temporarily reconfiguring parts of these roads to create dedicated contra-flow lanes for authorized Aayalolo buses traveling in the priority direction. The Ministry has emphasized that these lanes will be strictly reserved for Ayalolo BRT services, and private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles, and other unauthorized road users will not be permitted to use them.

The announcement was made on Monday, September 28. The Ministry stated that this intervention is part of efforts to enhance public transport services, alleviate congestion, and offer more dependable mobility for commuters traveling to and from the CBD. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive, and the Department of Urban Roads.

The MTTD will deploy personnel to critical locations and major intersections along the affected routes to manage traffic and enforce adherence to the contra-flow arrangement. The government expects that this initiative will improve the punctuality of Ayalolo services, reduce journey times, and help ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD.

The government also hopes that this move will encourage more commuters to choose mass public transportation, thereby reducing the strain caused by the overwhelming number of private vehicles on the roads.
