Shettima Returns To Abuja After Leading Nigeria’s Delegation To UNGA 81

Vice-President Kashim Shettima journeyed back to Abuja on Monday morning, having served as Nigeria's representative at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The delegation departed Abuja on September 20, 2026, to advocate for Nigeria's interests on the global stage.

During the meeting, Shettima presented President Bola Tinubu's National Statement in the General Debate. Nigeria reiterated its demand for reforms in the UN Security Council, including the introduction of permanent African representation, improved global financing, enhanced climate support, and increased multilateral cooperation.

The vice-president also participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group. Here, President Tinubu urged African nations to shift from mere raw mineral exports to processing, manufacturing, and value addition.

At a high-level education financing event jointly hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria's dedication to education as a vital investment in productivity, human capital, and national prosperity. He also backed the Global Partnership for Education's $5 billion financing campaign.

Shettima engaged with Nigerians living abroad, emphasizing their vital role as investors, experts, and network providers in national development. He also met with the newly elected leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed.

Throughout his interactions, Shettima promoted Nigeria's positions on development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace, and security. He reiterated President Tinubu's plea for a more inclusive and equitable global order.
