KMA spearheads construction of new Kumasi Central Divisional Police Headquarters, seeks support for relocation

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is leading efforts to construct a new Central Divisional Police Headquarters in the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi, aiming to replace the aging facility that struggles with overcrowding and insufficient space for modern policing. The project, costing an estimated GH¢4.8 million, is funded by the central government, but the Assembly is seeking additional support for a crucial intermediary step: building a temporary facility to house current police personnel during construction.

Currently, the Ashanti Central Division occupies nine offices in the dilapidated structure, lacking adequate space and facilities to efficiently serve the community. Mayor Kwasi Ofori Agyemang Boadi highlighted the benefits of the forthcoming three-story facility, which will offer expanded office space, conference rooms, and six specialized cells, including separate accommodations for juveniles, women, and hardened criminals.

The Mayor emphasized that this new facility will significantly improve policing efficiency and service delivery.

To bridge the gap during the construction period, the Assembly is planning to erect a temporary facility costing GH¢750,000. The Assembly is reaching out to corporate entities and philanthropic organizations for assistance in meeting this additional funding goal. So far, GH¢210,000 has been raised, with the recent contribution of GH¢200,000 from the Ashanti Business Owners Association (ABOA) bringing the total closer to the needed amount.

ABOA's Executive Secretary, Charles Kusi Appiah Kubi, emphasized the company's commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility by supporting the Assembly's initiative. He stated that safety is fundamental to all development, and investing in police security ensures the protection of businesses and investments. The ABOA pledged further support to the Assembly's efforts to improve the Central Business District (CBD).

Meanwhile, the KMA plans to create a dedicated Metropolitan Police Unit focused on crime prevention and management within the CBD. They are confident that the completion of the new divisional headquarters will greatly enhance policing capabilities in the area.
