Nirvana Pays Homage to Kurt Cobain as Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear Accept Video Vanguard Award at MTV VMAs: “He Was One of One”

The Video Vanguard lifetime achievement award was bestowed upon grunge icons Nirvana at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. The surviving members of the band, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, accepted the honor alongside touring guitarist Pat Smear. The award was presented by rap legend Chuck D, whose group Public Enemy was making waves in hip-hop at a time when Nirvana was doing the same in rock music.

Chuck D began his speech by acknowledging that "Nirvana never bent to the will of the mainstream," emphasizing that the band remained true to their vision throughout their career. He praised their sound, lyrics, and music videos, which he believed defined an era and set them apart from the formulaic trends of the time. The trio was shown in a video montage, reflecting on some of their most memorable clips, including "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "In Bloom," and "Heart-Shaped Box."

Krist Novoselic took the stage to deliver the acceptance speech, thanking everyone involved and particularly honoring Nirvana's late frontman, Kurt Cobain. He remarked that the band's videos were all born from Cobain's vision, and that the music had a life of its own, resonating deeply with people because they craved authenticity and genuine self-expression. Novoselic concluded by saying that Kurt would have been proud of the band's enduring legacy.
