At VMAs, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic Says Band’s Music Resonates Due to Its “Authenticity”

At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, surviving members of Nirvana - Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear - were recognized with the Video Vanguard Award. Introduced by Chuck D and accompanied by archival footage of Kurt Cobain's words, Novoselic took the stage to deliver an acceptance speech. He emphasized that Nirvana's enduring connection with fans stems from the band's "authenticity."

Novoselic highlighted that the band's vision, rooted in Kurt Cobain's unique artistic perspective, transcended the initial expectations. He observed, "The music had a life of its own." According to Novoselic, the reason for Nirvana's continued resonance is the public's ongoing craving for genuine, uncompromising art that accepts individuals as they are.

As the Video Vanguard Award represents significant contributions and a profound impact on music videos and popular culture, Nirvana became the first band to receive this honor since Duran Duran in 2003. The trio's impressive history includes three consecutive Best Alternative Video awards in the 1990s and various other accolades, such as Best New Artist in 1992 and Best Art Direction for "Heart-Shaped Box" in 1994.

Recently, the band reunited for two events, performing Nirvana classics alongside other renowned artists.
