Beijing - Chinese and U.S. officials disclosed details on Monday regarding an anticipated reduction in tariffs for various categories of goods. Both sides released extensive lists of products that will face significantly lower levies in the future. The exact date when the tariff reduction will take effect has not been announced yet.

U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed China's leader Xi Jinping with much fanfare in Washington last week. However, the outcomes of the summit fell short of the modest expectations. Critics have also accused Trump of failing to confront Xi on the numerous contentious issues between the two nations, opting instead to lavish him with excessive praise.

Among the contentious issues are China's substantial trade surplus. Consequently, Trump imposed temporary supplementary tariffs of up to 145 percent on Chinese imports shortly after taking office in early 2025. In response, China imposed an export halt for rare earth materials, among other measures. Last October, the two sides agreed to a standstill agreement in their trade dispute, which was subsequently extended by two months under the framework of the summit until January 10.
